During the Juneteenth weekend, Charlotte’s Bank of America Corporate Center and Well’s Fargo Duke Energy Center were illuminated with colors of the Pan-African flag as well as flags of Pan African organizations. Resident Brittany Moore, led the unprecedented movement by writing to Charlotte’s City Council explaining the need to show solidarity for Juneteenth, and the Black community.
Her words were loud and clear. For two nights, Charlotte’s skies were painted red, black, and green as well as red, black, and gold to commemorate the holiday.
The display was symbolic of the fact that Juneteenth pays tribute to people of all races, who have dedicated their lives in support of the abolitionist cause. Therefore, it should be celebrated and experienced by all — just like we as Americans embrace Cinco De Mayo and other holidays that are culturally accepted.
In this moving video, spoken word artist Steven ‘Anansiii’ Williams reminds us that there is still work to be done in our fight toward true freedom. While the historical light display was a small start in the process, we can’t lose our momentum.
