As we find ourselves in the middle of summer, it’s about that time when most are aching to do some serious shopping. Whether it’s to finish the summer strong or prepare for fall, the start of the season is always code for: shopping. But when’s the last time you went shopping in your own closet? THE BLOCK chatted with Charlotte-based wardrobe style and fashion insider, Stacee Michelle to learn all the ways you can rework what you already have and not break the bank

How can you reinvent what you already own in your closet?

Stacee suggests you start by changing your accessories. “The easiest way to make an outfit new is changing your jewelry and changing your shoes,” she explained. When in doubt, change the combination and be willing to step out of your comfort zone. With YouTube and TikTok exploding with DIY ideas, now is the perfect time to learn to upcycle your pieces. Make those denim jeans a pair of great shorts, find a new top to pair and you have a completely new look.

Should you re-wear an outfit you’ve already worn?

If you grew up in a phase of “don’t be an outfit repeater,” Michelle let’s us know, it’s okay to rewear a great outfit. “The goal is to buy less and buy better,” she told THE BLOCK. “If you buy something that’s $500 and wear it once, you spent $500. However, if you wear it multiple times, it’s paying for itself.”

As you walk into new stores, think about shopping with an investment mindset. If you don’t have a care for high-end clothing, maybe try high-end accessories. Michelle also points out that men can get away with wearing the same look—so we ought to erase the stigma and love what we have on.

What do you do if you only have basics in your closet?

Great! Then you have the perfect foundation to create memorable pieces. If you have a closet with basics, maximize them and make a statement with small detail.

“You don’t need to be in designer anything to put together a great look,” Michelle encouraged. A few basic must-haves—she suggest including a white button up, white tee, fitted jeans, black pump/shoe, little black dress and a blazer. A lot of these cross over to men as well, and Michelle encourages fellas to be fearless in their accessories and outer layers to give a new persona.

Pro tip: When you’re shopping for something new, ask yourself, “Can I create 3-5 looks with this piece?” If the answer is yes, buy it.

How do you get re-inspired with your closet?

“Don’t just look at your closet, try it on! You might love to look at it, but hate it on. So, it’s important you wear it again and make sure you are still in love, because you deserve to feel confident and comfortable,” Michelle said.

Though it can feel time consuming, you can make this process fun. If it’s an option, invite your friends over, FaceTime your trusted fashion friend and make your home a runway. If you love it, keep it. But if you don’t, consider donating it to someone who can re-love it for you.

Ultimately, the pieces you have in your closet and how you work with them are going to be influenced by the person you desire to be that day. The beauty about style is that it’s ever changing and can change from day to day or even from morning to night.

“The essence of style is confidence. Your style should radiate you! … what experiences you have and what you are influenced by becomes the trademark for your style.”

It’s important in this conversation to mention that style is a fluid definition. While one may feel exceptional in Northface, their counterpart may want a pair of Jimmy Choos. All in all, your style is yours and yours alone. It’s allowed to change, allowed to be redefined, and it shouldn’t have to cost you a great deal. Be inspired to shop your closet first and make a game out of the innovative ways you can wear what you already own!
